Recombinant Antibodies & Multiclonals Explained

Recombinant antibodies are produced by selecting antibodies that recognize specific epitopes (regions of a target antigen). The selected antibodies are then sequenced, cloned, and expressed in suitable host cells to produce consistent, well-defined antibodies.

Multiclonals are mixtures of recombinant antibodies, each designed to recognize a specific, selected epitope on the target antigen. By combining multiple recombinant antibodies, multiclonals can recognize several epitopes on the same target.

Advantages:

  • High reproducibility: Minimal batch-to-batch variation ensures consistent performance.

  • Scalable production: Antibodies can be produced in large quantities with consistent quality.

  • Defined composition: Recombinant production allows precise control over antibody identity and composition.

Limitations:

  • Higher cost: Development and production can be more expensive compared with conventional antibodies.
