PVDF membrane

Frequently used membrane for protein transfer with mechanism of protein binding being hydrophobic interactions. It is robust membrane, which can be air dried (which is fixing and unfolding transferred proteins) and re-wetted and shows a good protein retention, physical strength and chemical compatibility. 
PVDF membrane with proteins transferred to it, can be stored at RT for up to 6 months. Described here. 

Nitrocellulose membrane

Displays another mechanism of protein binging, which is through hydrophobic and electrostratic interactions, which can offer an improved result for certain proteins. This membrane type is more fragile compare to PVDF, but can offer better results in some cases. 

Our advise is to have both membrane types in the lab and test them in pararell. 


 


Which membrane to use for protein transfer?

Please keep in mind to chose appropriate pore size of used membrane, depending upon molecular weight of a target protein you aim to detect, as described here.
